The Top 6 Ways to Keep Your Gums Healthy and Functional

With gum (periodontal) disease affecting over half the adult population in America, something needs to be done to reverse the numbers. The inflammation and infection of the soft tissue inside the mouth, periodontal disease can serve as a gateway to a host of other oral and overall health issues. #1 – Make Flossing a Priority

While toothbrushing is a staple for most people’s dental hygiene routine, flossing is often overlooked. It should be noted that toothbrushing can only clean around 60% of the surfaces of your teeth. How can you clean the missing 40%? The answer is simple – with dental floss. The flexible nature of the material allows it to get into the tight spaces between your teeth to remove debris that would otherwise settle along the gum line and eventually cause problems.

#2 – Have Your Teeth Cleaned

You should be paying a dentist a visit every six months to have your teeth cleaned. If you have any plaque buildup, you won’t be able to remove it by merely brushing. The stubborn substance requires professional dental tools for safe and effective removal. By maintaining regular visits, you can expect to have healthier teeth and gums.

#3 – Quit Smoking

Tobacco usage releases harmful toxins inside your mouth that can cause dryness, increased bacteria growth and greater susceptibility to periodontal disease. If you’re treated for the condition, continuing to smoke can also make it harder for your gums to heal.

#6 – Incorporate Therapeutic Mouthwash into Your Regimen

Usually available over the counter, a therapeutic mouthwash can help reduce plaque and prevent the chances of developing gingivitis, the first stage of periodontal disease. There is an added bonus for rinsing with a therapeutic mouthwash solution: fresh breath!
